A bit about me:
I began lifting weights when
I was 32 years old because I was tired of being “the skinny blonde.” On
more than one occasion I was referred to as frail and I really resented it. As it
was, I had a poor self-image growing up and went through a few episodes of anorexia as an
adult. My way of handling stressful situations was to quit eating. It was my way of feeling I had some control in my life
when I was very desperately out of control.
As I began putting my life back together, I realized I needed more strength; more physical strength, more emotional
strength, more spiritual strength.
I had always been athletic but was somewhat intimidated by weights. Then a friend got me a three month gym membership
as a gift so I decided to check it out. I headed to the gym determined that I was not going to be “the skinny blonde”
any more.
As a perfectionist with a highly competitive nature, I loved the experience in the gym. I soaked up as much
knowledge as I could from various trainers and began my journey into better health. I was beginning a transformation that
would affect me in the most positive of ways.
My attitude about life improved and so did my self-esteem. I was feeling happier and healthier. I was adding
weight, improving my emotional state and channeling my stress in a positive manner.
I remember envying different women in the gym that had nice physiques and thinking, “I want to look like
that someday.” It was a few years later, but I remember the day one of
the guys working out at my gym asked if I was lifting to prepare for a competition. Me? Compete? I was so flattered, I was
beyond myself. Then I took a good look at myself in the mirror and began to realize
a transformation that had taken place.
I hadn’t started lifting with the intention of competing, but after hearing that comment and after a great
deal of prodding from fellow gym-mates, I decided to enter my first bodybuilding competition. Now I’m happy, healthy
and hooked on the challenge.
